Skyline Game

Last night we played Skyline at Skyline because the game was rescheduled after weather delays. We got hammered and lost 35-69 in a difficult game. Skyline is an outstanding team and they have won the last 78 district wins in a row.

Why did we lose so badly you ask...

Well it might have been...
Sam Couch, our starting point guard, was diagnosed with strep on Wednesday, and literally went in for about 30 seconds to shoot free throws because Alex Williams got injured.

It might have been...
Alex went up strong for a lay-up and hit knees with a Skyline defender and has severe bone bruising.

It might have been...
Trish Jones and Mkari Warmsley did not even attend the game.

It might have been...
Jani Jones was hospitalized Sunday and Monday and diagnosed with bronchitis, she has trouble breathing when we have drastic weather changes. She tried to play the whole game and only came out of the game when we made her. She had two full blown asthma attacks and still wanted to continue to play. She wanted to win more than anything and has the true heart of a champion.

It might have been...
Hannah Wedding was diagnosed with the flu on Tuesday and played some, but not at her full strength.

It might have been...
Chasity Dodson, yes... she is on crutches today, suffered an ankle injury in the first quarter.

It might have been...
We did not have practice after school on Tuesday or Wednesday, and were completely out of school on Wednesday due to the weather. When RISD cancels school, we do not have after school activities either. The girls being off two days was evident. I do not know Skyline's schedule over the week, but they did not look rusty at all. They did a great job.

It might have been...
We missed so many shots! We could not make a shot if our lives depended on it. It was one of those nights where the whole team was cold! We misssed lay-up after lay-up in the first quarter, and I knew it would be a long night.

I like to think it is because the last reason mostly. We were playing injured and sick, but we had shots. We just did not hit the shots we had. You cannot beat any team, and definitely not Skyline, if you shoot poorly. Good teams, such as Skyline, make you alter your shot or shoot differently based on their defense, their blocks, the time you have to get the shot off, the foul that comes with the shot, etc. But regardless, we have to score! We just have to!

Shooting Percentages:
Chasity - 0 for 8 - 0%
Sam - 0 for 1 - 0%
Jani - 7 of 15
Tierra - 2 of 9
Hannah - 0 of 5 - 0%
Alex - 1 of 6
Kosi - 2 of 6
DJ - 0 of 2 - 0%

I was so impressed with the heart and fight Jani Jones had and the way she led her team in the trenches of battle. Most would roll over and quit when faced with four quarters of hard defense and pressing, but not Jani. She does not know how to quit.

Also, Tierra Scott did an outstanding job on defense. She is a sophomore on Varsity and played like a senior. She took the ball away from one of the best point guards in the state. I was so proud of her. Also, Kosi Ekwu did a great job as she had to play the whole game. She is use to about 10 minutes a game, and she had to play the whole game against tough posts. She did a great job banging with their posts and rebounding against them.

I am also very proud of JV Captain DJ Sandidge who was moved up as we had so few players. She did a great job working hard on defense, rebounding, and pushing herself to play at the Varsity level against undefeated Skyline.

Varsity Standouts:
Jani Jones - 17 points, 4 rebounds
Tierra Scott - 5 points, 4 rebounds, 6 steals
Kosi Ekwu - 4 points, 7 rebounds

Jessi Youman - 8.1 ppg, 170 total points for the year
DJ Sandidge - 7.7 ppg, 161 total points for the year
Mary Potter - 5.0 ppg, 106 total points for the year
Divinity Dixon - 4.1 ppg, 87 total points for the year
Myisha Wells - 3.0 ppg, 62 total points for the year

CREEKVIEW GAMES - 7-1 in DISTRICT!!

Your Lady Wildcats pulled off a nail biter Tuesday versus #3 Creekview as they won 47-45. We beat Creekview 14-10 in the first quarter after Creekview came out fired up on the home floor. We finished the quarter strong and beat them in the last few minutes of the 1st quarter. We won 14-12 the second quarter, and 13-11 the third quarter. However, we hit a dry spell scoring and offensively and all our girls went cold during the 4th quarter. We could not hit a shot and our offense looked dismal. Creekview defeated us 12-6 in the 4th quarter. But, our ladies pulled off another great win against a great team.

I am so proud of the girls for finishing against Richardson and now Creekview. Early in the season, we got into overtime play versus Allen and Wylie. I drew up plays for Chasity, Sam, and Hannah to hit game winning shots and none of our girls could knock them down. They were not use to high pressure situations and last minute plays. We never went to Jani because every team expected us to have her shoot. However, as devastating as these close losses were, I would not trade them for the world. Our girls learned many valuable lessons including: how to play under pressure, complete a 12 or 7 second play drawn up quickly, and how to finish poised.

Our girls did just this again versus Creekview. Versus Richardson, Captain Sam Couch hit the game winning shot from the elbow and we had Jani and Alex down low to rebound and for a distraction. She knocked it down perfectly. Versus Creekview, we had Jani take the ball with 30 seconds left on the clock. I told her to keep the ball as we flattened out on the baseline. She took care of the ball and at 12 seconds began to drive inside. As the defense collapsed on her in a double team the guards moved up the three point line to make themselves available. As Jani faked a spin move inside, they triple teamed her as we thought they would. She dished inside to Captain Hannah Wedding with a perfect bounce pass. Hannah was as cool as a cucumber and knocked down the shot with ease to put us up by two.

Hannah did two things right and has developed as a young Varsity player in just one season. For one, she kept the ball in her outside hand, away from the defense, and made a left hand jump shot on the left side. One thing I say to the girls over and over and over again is to shoot with their left hand on the left side. They have a wide open shot, and if someone wants to block it they have to reach across them, break the plane, foul and create an and one situation. Not only did Hannah keep the ball in her left hand, she kept the girl on her inside hip and went up with a great angle.

To top it off, not only did Hannah make the game winning shot, she also made the game winning steal. Creekview got the ball right in front of their bench and drew up a last second play. With three seconds left, they tried to throw the ball over the top for a backside score. Hannah grabbed the weak pass and held on tight until time expired! Great job Hannah!

I am also so proud of Kosi Ekwu. We have been waiting and waiting for her to begin developing into the post we know she can be. Kosi began making her own highlight film versus Creekview as she scored a beautiful up and under move with two defenders on her. She FINALLY kept the ball high, did not fade away, and went up strong. She looked like the big post she is and scored at will. She did a great job and did not get pushed under the basket. She held her ground, had great post ups/position, and scored. I am so pleased she is coming along right when we need her. Great job Kosi!

How we won based on free throws is beyond me. We only shot 5 free throws the whole night to their 18. They made 11 of 18 and shot 13 more free shots than we did. I have never coached a game where we only shot 5 free throws. My teams are too aggressive offensively to only shoot 5 free throws. Thank goodness they missed 7 of their free throws so we could capture the 2 point win.

They JV won 38-27 and defeated Creekview JV 10-9 the 1st quarter, 9-3 the second quarter, 8-5 the third quarter, and 11-10 the 4th quarter. I was most pleased with them winning every single quarter. I tell the girls that each quarter is a mini-game and they should compete to win each quarter and if they do they will inevitably win the game.

Surprisingly, the JV shot 25 free throws compared to the Varsity's 5 free throws. Usually a Varsity team shoots more free throws.

Varsity Standouts:
Jani Jones - 12 points, 7 assists!!!!!, 5 steals, 3 rebounds
Chasity Dodson - 11 points, 4 rebounds, 6 steals!!!!!
Sam Couch - 9 points, 4 rebounds
Hannah Wedding - 7 points, 6 rebounds, made game winning shot with 8 seconds left!!!, 2 steals, made game winning steal with 3 seconds left!!!
Kosi Ekwu - 6 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists

JV Scoring:
Jessi Youman - 17 points!!!, 5 of 6 free throws
DJ Sandidge - 6 points
Divinity Dixon - 5 points
Mary Potter - 4 points

Your Lady Wildcats 6-1! - W.T. White Game

The Varsity Lady Wildcats won 76-21 versus W.T. White to wrap up the first round of district. At this time the standings are exactly what I predicted. We are now sitting in clear 2nd. However, we have two HUGE games coming up versus current #3 Creekview and #1 Skyline. They are both excellent teams and we will have to play top notch basketball to defeat them. However, after tonight I believe we can do it!

I was most impressed with our bench. Sophomores Tierra Scott and Bridget O'Brien played their best games and looked liked seniors versus sophomores. They led the team tonight with their unselfish play, heart, and hustle.

The first quarter we defeated the Lady Longhorns 24-6, the second 16-3, the third 21-2, and the 4th quarter 15-10. Every single Lady Cat played major minutes and contributed to our win, and we focused on improving our individual games as well as team play.

Our JV won 53-14! They played down the first half some and let W.T. White set the tempo; however, after half time adjustments and a pep talk, they came out strong! They tied the first quarter 6-6, won the second 16-2, the third 14-2, and the fourth 17-4.

I was most pleased with the way JV took care of their free throws. I have been upset with their free throw percentage the last few games. I always look at missed free throws when we have close losses, like their Berkner and Richardson losses, and they were not taking their time and shooting well under pressure. They really focused on their free throws this past week and did an outstanding job at the line.

Varsity Standouts:
Alex Williams - 11 points, 9 rebounds, 3 steals, 2 blocks
Jani Jones - 11 points, 11 rebounds, double double
Tierra Scott - 10 points, 3 assists, 8 rebounds, 2 steals
Sam Couch - 8 points, 2 assists, 2 rebounds
Mkari Warmsley - 8 points, 2 of 2 FT - 100%, 3 assists, 4 rebounds
Trish Jones - 8 points, 2 of 2 FT - 100%, 4 rebounds
Chasity Dodson - 6 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals
Bridget O'Brien - 6 points, 7 assists!!!!!, 3 rebounds, 2 steals
Hannah Wedding - 6 points, 2 of 2 FT - 100%, 11 rebounds
Kosi Ekwu - 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 points, 2 of 2 FT - 100%

JV Scoring:
Katie Spurgin - 8 points
DJ Sandidge - 8 points,
Tiera Bickham - 8 points, 2 for 2 FT - 100%
Mary Potter 7 points, 2 for 2 FT - 100%
Janisa McRuffin - 6 points
Jessi Youman - 6 points, 3 of 5 FT
Divinity Dixon - 5 points, 3 of 3 FT - 100%
Myisha Wells - 5 points

QUESTION OF THE WEEK #6

QUESTION: What are the current standings for our girls in district? How do you think the teams will finish after the first round is done?

COACH MULLIGAN'S ANSWER:
Skyline 6-0
Lake Highlands 5-1
Creekview 5-1
Richardson 3-3
Berkner 2-4
Sunset 2-4
WT White 1-5
Molina 0-6

Skyline 7-0 (plays Creekview)
Lake Higlands 6-1 (plays WT White)
Creekview 5-2 (plays Skyline)
Richardson 4-3 (plays Molina)
Berkner 3-4 (plays Sunset)
Sunset 2-5 (plays Berkner)
WT White 1-6 (plays Lake Highlands)
Molina 0-7 (plays Richardson)

RICHARDSON GAME

If I could think of one word to describe the entire night it would be.... controversial! The JV lost a heartbreaker at the buzzer by 2 as Alex Ziehm swished a shot and they waved it off and said it was too late. The girls were devastated because they played a much more athletic team with a lot of height and size. Two of Richardson's JV players looked like they could be Varsity players. The final score was 43-45 and our JV set four records in one night which made the loss all the more heartbreaking. 1) We scored 7 threes 2) Jessi Youman set a personal record with 5 threes 3)Jessi Youman scored a season individual high 18 points 4) Jessi Youman scored a season team high 18 points (previously held by DJ Sandidge with 16 versus Sunset)

The Varsity girls began their game with unfinished business as they saw their JV teammates stripped of their overtime play. They wanted to win all the more for their JV teammates. The game started off with lots of fouls as we got numerous players in foul trouble and our bench had to play major minutes. When our bench got in foul trouble too, we knew it would be a long night. We could not seem to hit a shot against Richardson's outstanding gutsy defense. In fact, all our points the first quarter were free throws alone. We lost the first quarter 8-5 and we shot 6 free throws, scoring five of them: three by Jani Jones and two by Hannah Wedding, to their 12 free throws. They made 6 of their 12 and a field goal. As the game continued with gutsy defense from both teams, we started to find our offensive rhythm more. We scored 15 second quarter points after adjustments and they scored 12. They shot 10 free throws to our 6 and we made 3 and they made 4. We were still not running our offenses up to par as their defense was making us alter shots and options. I applaud Richardson and their coaches for how much they have improved defensively! The third quarter both teams were again shut down by defensive efforts and we lost 5-6. They shot 6 free throws to our 2 and we made one of two and they made 0 of 6. I bring this up because I always analyze free throws after a close win or loss. Thank goodness they were not shooting free throws well since we were off as a team also. We have been shooting a pretty high free throw percentage as a team and we missed numerous free throws, especially in the fourth quarter that could have altered the win. The last quarter we won 13-9 as 7 of their 9 points were free throws, and we struggled desperately on the free throw line. One of their players did an amazing job on the line and scored 4 of 4 in the fourth quarter. Alex Williams stepped up for us and got to the line as she banged inside and got off tough shots as she was fouled. However, we just did not shoot well from the line as a team the fourth quarter. This could have cost us the game if Richardson would have made more than one field goal. The girls pulled off a win 38-37 in the final seconds of the game. Captain Sam Couch hit the game winning shot right inside the elbow to clinch the district win.

The reason I describe the night as controversial is because of three major calls that could have sent the game in the other direction.
1) the lead official called off Bridget O'Brien's three when the official that was feet away from her made the call and it was his call to make. He thought it was a two because she followed her shot, as any good shooter does. (1 point taken away)
2) the lead official charged us with a time out as the ball was in flight to Sam Couch and she scored two points. He waved off the shot again and said that I called a time out before the shot. I told him the only thing I was calling out was our offense to our girls. He said he heard time out from me at some point and he was sure of it. However, he let play resume for four seconds before it registered he had heard it... interesting! (2 points taken away)
3) at the end of the game the lead official added 5.97 seconds to the clock as it had run down to 2.7 seconds. He said that Richardson had called a time out previous to the clock running down; however, Sam made her game winning shot at 7 seconds, so I am unsure how the time did not move after her shot as the ball was live and Richardson had inbounded it.

If that was not enough controversy when three of our points were taken away in a one point game, five for the night including JV, we had two players foul out, and four end with four fouls. We also have a lot of injuries right now including four knees, two shoulders, a toe, and hand. Jani Jones played a quarter and a half because of foul trouble, which hurt us offensively, and Sam Couch played major minutes with a virus. She had been sick all day, but wanted to play. Despite all the efforts against us, the Lady Wildcats came out on top. We are so proud of our ladies for their hard work and determination and amazing poise and discipline at the end of the game. We jumped in a 1-2-2 press to throw off Richardson as they inbounded the ball for their final shot because we usually run two different presses 99% of the time. We needed to show them a new look to throw them off possibly, and the girls did just that and executed perfectly to clinch the win. Every single girl had to contribute and the bench did great when starters were in foul trouble, injured, or sick! It was a true team effort!!

What I want to reflect on when I think of this game is not the controversial calls or one controversial official. What I want to focus on is the energy in the gym. I want to thank every single fan from both teams for their support during the game. We have never EVER ended a game with every one in the gym on their feet. We have never EVER played with a packed gym on our side and it so loud the girls could not hear me and we had to use our hand signals at the end. We have NEVER EVER had the intense gym atmosphere that our boys have all the time. We got it... Richardson got it... every girl on both teams got to be a super star for that moment. I love that.

This is what you play for... the close two point game, the crowd going wild, every one on their feet, the game winning shot, the thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat. This is basketball!

Richardson should be so proud of their team effort, their team play, and their vast improvement, and I know without a doubt we will both be playoff teams. We just don't know the order yet, hopefully we will both be in the top two after the second round! You never know! DC '09!!!!

Varsity Standouts:
Sam Couch - 9 points, (game winning shot) 4 of 6 field goals, 2 assists (played with virus)
Alex Williams - 8 points, 3 boards, 2 blocks
Jani Jones - 8 points, 4 rebounds (played with knee injury)
Hannah Wedding - 6 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 block (played with injured shoulder)

Junior Varsity Standouts:
Jessi Youman - 18 points!!!!, 5 three pointers!!!!!!!
DJ Sandidge - 10 points, 4 of 6 free throws
Mary Potter - 7 points

BERKNER GAMES - 4-1 in district!!!!

The Lady Wildcats won an important game against the athletic Berkner Rams. We won 64-52. We won the first quarter 19-13, the second 14-5, the third 16-14, and lost the 4th 15-20. When we got up by 23 points, we subbed the bench in and they struggled some with Berkner's hard nose defense. It was difficult for us because we had three true posts in at once and Mkari was forced to play guard as Kosi stands at 6'3" and Trish at 5'10", so it was difficult getting the ball up the floor for sophomores Bridget O'Brien and Tierra Scott. However, the ladies did a great job by finishing with a win for us.

It was a tough night as Jani got in foul trouble quickly and only played 2 quarters for us the whole night. Her leadership on the floor offensively and defensively is greatly needed. Hannah Wedding also was out because of a shoulder injury, so our bench really had to play major minutes.

I was EXTREMELY proud of seniors Chasity Dodson and Alex Williams who said, "They aren't getting beat on their home floor by Berkner", the two literally took over and led this team to a victory. Junior Sam Couch also took care of the ball for us and did a great job against Berkner's defense when they trap on ball. Sam does a great job under pressure and in pressure situations such as traps on the ball.

What the coaches were most proud of was the fact that we had four players score in double digits. Berkner had to guard all five all night long. When they put the focus on stopping Jani, the other girls just stepped up to win and dominate offensively. Great job ladies!

DUNCANVILLE TOURNAMENT

This year was our first season to enter the Duncanville tournament or the Sandra Meadows 58th Annual Classic. It is a huge tournament that hosts 32 of the nation's best team. This year Fayetteville won the tournament from Arkansas. It is a great tournament with amazing competition. I did not think our girls were ready for this type of tournament the past two years, but we entered it this year hoping we were be able to compete with outstanding teams.

Our first game was versus Duncanville, a phenomenal program, that has gone to the state tournament more times than years I have been coaching! The have pride, poise, and players! We lost 46-67. However, we competed the second half when we relaxed and started playing. The first two quarters were were overwhelmed with the tournament and were somewhat shell shocked. When the girls got behind and realized they had nothing to lose, they began to play and actually beat Duncanville or outscored them the second half. We lost the first quarter 12-26, the second quarter 6-19, and then came out strong the second half and won the 3rd quarter 14-9 and tied the fourth up at 14.

DUNCANVILLE STATS
Jani Jones - 17 points, 5 rebounds, 1 steal
Chasity Dodson - 9 points, 2 of 2 FT, 100% FT, 2 rebounds, 1 steal
Sam Couch - 9 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal, 2 assists

We faced Denton Ryan for the second game and they are also a great team, with great athletes, and big post play. We lost 44-67. We started slow once again and lost the first quarter early, and then won the 3rd quarter by a small margin, and lost the 2nd and 4th by a small margin.

DENTON RYAN STATS
Hannah Wedding - 15 points, 11 rebounds, 3 steals, 1 assist
Jani Jones - 12 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 block, 1 assist
Bridget O'Brien - 8 points
Tierra Scott - 7 points, 3 rebounds, 1 block, 2 steals, 1 assist
Alex Williams - 5 points, 8 rebounds, 1 block

After two losses, we ended up in the friendship bracket. However, we were not to ashamed to be there because we had played outstanding competition. Also, state qualifier Garland Naaman Forest was there and they are a phenomenal team too. It was just a great tournament with a LOT of competition.

Our final game was versus Clear Creek High School out of League City, Texas. We won a close game 43-39 and were very proud of our girls strong finish. We led the whole game, but Clear Creek made a good run during the second half. We were proud the girls kept their composure and played with poise and finished a tough game.

CLEAR CREEK STATS
Jani Jones - 17 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists
Hannah Wedding - 10 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks, 4 steals!
Alex Williams - 6 points, 4 rebounds, 1 block, 1 steal
Chasity Dodson - 5 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals

SKYLINE GAME

We lost to Skyline 41-59 and the girls were devastated because we were competing for district champions. It brought us to 2-1 in district, and it is still very early. However, the girls know Skyline is the team to beat in district 9-5A, and the team we are competing with for district champs. We lost the first quarter 9-14, the second quarter 14-21, tied up the 3rd at 9 all, and lost the fourth 9-15. The thing I noticed the most was that the girls seemed extremely nervous and anxious. Nervous anticipation is good when it causes a team to get up for a game, but bad when it causes a team to make mistakes or have turnovers. Unfortunately, our team had more turnovers than normal and seemed to be rushing their passes and shots. Skyline is a phenomenal team with great athletes and it was a great game. Our girls plan to beat them at their place and tie up our district records.

VARSITY STATS
Jani Jones - led all scorers for both teams with 23 points, she was 11 of 16 FT, 4 rebounds, 2 steals
Alex Williams - 5 points, 10 rebounds, 1 block

The JV lost 28-52 to a gutsy athletic Skyline team. The girls also seemed very nervous and overwhelmed. I was proud of sophomore captain, Jessi Youman, for playing up to the competition and not backing down on drives inside or defense. Junior captain, DJ Sandidge did a great job on the boards and with put back shots and post moves. They scored 21 of our 28 points collectively.

JV SCORING
Jessi Youman - 11 points
DJ Sandidge - 10 points

MOLINA GAME

The Molina game was exciting in the fact that it was a big win for us, as well as our team player of the game was senior Britney Thompson who tore her ACL in preseason. She played versus Molina and almost played the entire game. It was great to see her back in action and enjoying herself. We won 55-6. We had a strong 1st quarter with 20 points to pull away, and then worked on some things offensively and defensively the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.

The JV also won big also and held Molina to only 2 points. The final score was 36-2.

VARSITY STATS
Alex Williams - 10 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals, 2 of 2 FT, 100% FT
Britney Thompson - 9 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, 3 of 5 FG
